But from 1984 to 1991, the man who brought Ronald to life with unmatched charm and enthusiasm was Squire Fridell. As the official face of McDonald’s beloved clown, Fridell lit up television screens, parades, and community events with his unforgettable presence. His joyful spirit and comedic talent helped define an era of McDonald’s history filled with smiles and Happy Meals.

Squire Fridell didn’t just become Ronald McDonald; he elevated the role. With an impressive background in acting and more than 3,000 commercial appearances to his name, Fridell brought a rare blend of professionalism and playfulness to every performance. His version of Ronald wasn’t just entertaining: he was a friend to children and a trusted face for families across the country.

After retiring the red wig and oversized shoes, Fridell shifted his energy from commercials to the countryside. He and his wife founded GlenLyon Vineyards & Winery in Sonoma, California, where they poured their creativity into small-batch winemaking. It was a new chapter filled with care, community, and passion; just like his years at McDonald’s, but with grapes instead of burgers.

Today, we celebrate Squire Fridell for the unforgettable magic he brought to McDonald’s and beyond. His legacy lives on in the joy he spread as “Ronald McDonald” and in the warmth he brought to everything he did.
