A POA SPECIAL EDITION With Julian Mier (santpoort)!

Welcome to a SPECIAL EDITION of the Piece of Advice Newsletter!

Good morning! Today we are looking into a really cool musician who I recently discovered, santpoort! He’s an amazing electronic music artist who is also a gifted illustrator! I was even lucky enough to ask him a few questions!

Julien Mier, known artistically as santpoort, is a Dutch-born, Sydney-based musician whose work blends lo-fi beats, dreamy electronic textures, and gentle ambient elements. His stage name comes from his hometown; Santpoort, in the Netherlands; and much of his music carries that sense of longing, memory, and quiet wonder. As both a producer and illustrator, he builds sonic landscapes that feel handcrafted, often using real-world sounds to give his tracks warmth and character.

His 2024 album “Maybe Not Tomorrow” marks one of his most thoughtful releases, exploring themes of climate change, uncertainty, and hope. The record mixes delicate melodies with found sounds like toy instruments and household noises, creating an atmosphere that feels intimate yet expansive. Tracks such as “in my dreams” showcase his blend of psychedelic pop influences and reflective songwriting.

Before that album, santpoort released several projects that shaped his evolving style. The 2025 EP “dinosaur valley” offers an imaginative, almost storybook-like journey, while earlier albums like “Ocean Tales” and his debut “Picturebook” reveal the foundations of his lo-fi and downtempo sound. These works chart his growth from beat-driven instrumentals to more textured, emotionally rich compositions.

Among his standout songs, “cloudstreet” remains a listener favorite for its themes of homesickness and searching for belonging. Other notable tracks, including “the grey city,” “big destructive devices,” and “life moves fast,” highlight his talent for blending soft vocals, atmospheric production, and subtle field recordings. Together, his catalog forms a reflective, immersive body of work that invites listeners into a world shaped by nostalgia, nature, and imagination.

Bonus Questions:

Giancarlo: Who was your favorite musician growing up?

Julian: Probably either Damon Albarn or Brian Eno.

Giancarlo: Did you have any push back from friends and family on wanting to be a musician/artist?

Julian: Well not exactly, however there were many friends who were way more talented at playing instruments than me, I just ended up being more resilient (stubborn) in my pursuit of doing it!

Giancarlo: Which of your projects are you the most proud of?

Julian: I can't really choose, but my record ''ocean tales'' is still something i'm very proud of.

Giancarlo: What is your favorite aspect of “Dinosaur Valley”?

Julian: It reminds me of my childhood of nostalgic games and playing with toys; and it also reminds me that inspiration is everywhere, I found this little satchel bag in a thrift store and ''dinosaur valley'' was the logo on it!
