Return of the Jedi!
A POA SPECIAL EDITION With Judy Elkins!
Welcome to a SPECIAL EDITION of the Piece of Advice Newsletter!
Good morning! Today we are celebrating “May the 4th be with you” by looking into a fan favorite of the “Star Wars” films, Return of the Jedi! I was even lucky enough to ask a couple of questions to a sculptor who worked on the film, Judy Elkins!

“Return of the Jedi” (1983) marked the epic conclusion to the original “Star Wars” trilogy; a cinematic journey that had revolutionized filmmaking. Directed by Richard Marquand and produced by George Lucas, the film faced the immense challenge of living up to the cultural phenomenon created by “A New Hope” and “The Empire Strikes Back”. Behind the scenes, Lucas remained the guiding force, overseeing every creative detail despite handing directing duties to Marquand. The production was ambitious: elaborate sets, groundbreaking visual effects from Industrial Light & Magic, and the introduction of memorable new worlds such as Jabba’s Palace and the forest moon of Endor. Filming took place in California’s redwood forests, the Yuma Desert, and soundstages in England; each location pushing the limits of 1980s filmmaking technology.
One of the lesser-known heroes of “Return of the Jedi” was Judy Elkins, a talented creature performer who brought life to several of the film’s alien characters. Elkins’ work inside elaborate costumes helped populate the vibrant and otherworldly environments that became hallmarks of the saga. Working alongside other performers under layers of prosthetics and animatronics, she contributed to the lived-in authenticity of the Star Wars universe. Her dedication, along with that of the creature and effects teams, exemplified the craftsmanship that made Jedi feel both fantastical and real; a balance that remains a hallmark of Lucasfilm’s storytelling.
Upon its release on May 25, 1983, “Return of the Jedi” was met with immense anticipation and quickly became a box office success, earning over $475 million worldwide. Critics praised its thrilling action, emotional weight, and the resolution of Luke Skywalker’s journey, though some were divided on the lighter tone and inclusion of the Ewoks. Still, audiences embraced the film wholeheartedly, celebrating its mix of spectacle and sentiment. The climactic battle between father and son; and the redemption of Darth Vader; cemented Jedi as one of cinema’s most iconic finales.
Over the decades, “Return of the Jedi” has only grown in stature, influencing generations of filmmakers and fans alike. Its blend of groundbreaking effects, mythic storytelling, and human emotion has kept it central to the “Star Wars” legacy. Behind its sweeping battles and galactic drama were countless artists like Judy Elkins, whose creative efforts shaped the magic seen on screen. More than forty years later, the film remains not only a beloved conclusion to a trilogy but also a timeless example of collaborative movie-making at its finest.
