Project Hail Mary!
A POA SPECIAL EDITION With Andy Weir!
Welcome to a SPECIAL EDITION of the Piece of Advice Newsletter!
Good morning! To celebrate the release of the new film “Project Hail Mary”, we are looking into the amazing author who wrote the book it’s based on; Andy Weir! I personally am a huge fan of his work and I was lucky enough to ask him a couple of questions!

Andy Weir’s path to becoming one of today’s most popular science fiction authors wasn’t a straight one. Born in 1972, Weir grew up fascinated by science and space, teaching himself programming at a young age and eventually working as a computer engineer. His love for space exploration and storytelling, however, never left him. In the early 2000s, he began writing fiction as a side project, publishing stories online for free. One of those stories, “The Martian”, would go on to change his life forever.
“The Martian” started as a serialized novel posted on his personal website in 2011, where readers quickly became hooked on astronaut Mark Watney’s fight for survival on Mars. After fans requested a downloadable version, Weir self-published it as an e-book, and it skyrocketed in popularity. Within months, it was picked up by a major publisher and then adapted into the 2015 film starring Matt Damon, which earned critical acclaim and box office success. This breakout moment launched Weir from part-time writer to a leading voice in modern science fiction.
Following that success, Weir continued to explore themes of science, humanity, and survival in his later novels. His 2017 book “Artemis” delved into life on the Moon, while his 2021 hit “Project Hail Mary” told the story of a lone astronaut on a desperate mission to save Earth, blending humor, high-stakes science, and deep human connection. Fun fact: Weir’s attention to scientific accuracy is so detailed that NASA scientists and space enthusiasts alike praise his work for being as informative as it is entertaining.
Culturally, Andy Weir’s books have had a major impact by sparking broader public interest in space exploration and STEM fields. “The Martian” in particular inspired discussions about real-life missions to Mars and how humans could one day survive there. His writing manages to make complex science accessible and exciting to everyday readers, proving that nerdy details about chemistry, physics, or engineering can become page-turning thrillers. Today, Weir stands as an author who bridges the gap between hard science and mainstream storytelling, leaving a lasting mark on both literature and pop culture.
