A POA SPECIAL EDITION With Lindsay Crouse!

Welcome to a SPECIAL EDITION of the Piece of Advice Newsletter!

Good Morning! Today we are looking into a very interesting film, Places In My Heart! I was even lucky enough to ask one of the stars of the film; Lindsay Crouse, a couple of questions!

“Places in the Heart” (1984) grew from a deeply personal idea by writer and director Robert Benton. Benton was inspired by stories from his own family about life in Texas during the Great Depression, particularly the experiences of widowed women who struggled to keep their farms and families together. Drawing from those memories, he created the story of Edna Spalding, a young mother who must save her cotton farm after her husband’s sudden death. The film blends quiet realism with moments of humor and resilience, capturing the determination of ordinary people during difficult times.

Production emphasized authenticity and a strong ensemble cast. Sally Field led the film as Edna, supported by performances from Ed Harris, Danny Glover, John Malkovich, and Lindsay Crouse. Filming took place in rural Texas locations to reflect the setting that inspired Benton’s story. The performances were natural and understated, allowing the emotional weight of the characters’ struggles; economic hardship, prejudice, and community tensions; to unfold in a believable way.

Lindsay Crouse played Margaret Lomax, a sharp and determined banker’s wife whose life becomes complicated when her husband leaves her for another woman. Crouse brought both wit and vulnerability to the role, creating one of the film’s most memorable characters. Her performance earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress, highlighting the depth she brought to Margaret’s mix of pride, humor, and unexpected friendship with Edna.

Upon its release, “Places in the Heart” received strong critical acclaim and lasting recognition. Sally Field won the Academy Award for Best Actress, while Benton won Oscars for Best Original Screenplay and Best Director. Over time, the film has been remembered for its thoughtful look at perseverance, compassion, and community during the Depression. Its quiet storytelling and powerful performances; especially from actors like Lindsay Crouse; have helped secure its place as one of the most respected American dramas of the 1980s.

Bonus Question:
