Welcome to the Piece of Advice Newsletter!
Good morning and Happy December! I’ve been working for months to make sure this is the BEST month yet for our newsletter to celebrate this beloved month of the year; many people’s favorite! We are starting off strong with a dive into the director of “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation”, Jeremiah S. Chechik!

Jeremiah S. Chechik has had a career that’s as versatile as it is surprising. Starting off in the world of commercials and fashion photography, he made a name for himself with stylish visuals and a knack for mood. That same sharp eye caught the attention of Hollywood, and soon Chechik was helming major feature films. His work often blends charm with a sense of visual flair, and he’s never been afraid to jump between genres; from comedy to thriller to fantasy.
Of course, “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” is the crown jewel in Chechik’s filmography. Released in 1989, this holiday classic has become a must-watch tradition for millions each December. Chechik perfectly balanced heartfelt family chaos with laugh-out-loud moments, working from a script by the legendary John Hughes. From Clark Griswold’s quest for the perfect Christmas to the unforgettable lighting of the house, Chechik’s direction gave the film a warmth and timelessness that’s kept it beloved for over three decades. It was his first feature film, and what a debut it was!
Beyond “Christmas Vacation”, Chechik continued to take creative risks. He directed “Benny & Joon”, a quirky romantic drama that showcased Johnny Depp in one of his most endearing early roles. The film was a surprise hit and highlighted Chechik’s ability to tell offbeat but heartfelt stories. He later took on stylish thrillers like “Diabolique” and even stepped into the world of high-concept fantasy with “The Avengers” (1998), based on the British spy series; not to be confused with the Marvel franchise.
In more recent years, Chechik has worked in television, directing episodes of series like “The Bronx Is Burning” and “Helix”. He’s also ventured into producing, sharing his talents behind the camera in new ways. Whether he’s crafting holiday hijinks or exploring darker tones, Jeremiah Chechik has always brought a unique vision to his work; one that combines elegance, humor, and heart!
