History of Hallmark Ornaments!

A POA SPECIAL EDITION WITH EDYTHE KEGRIZE!

Welcome to a SPECIAL EDITION of the Piece of Advice Newsletter!

Good morning! Today we are looking into the origins of Hallmark Ornaments! I was even lucky enough to ask Hallmark Artist of 40+ years, Edythe Kegrize; a couple of questions!

Hallmark’s humble beginnings trace back to 1910, when Joyce Clyde Hall began selling postcards in Kansas City with a vision of helping people share meaningful connections. What started as a small mail-order postcard venture soon grew into the globally recognized Hallmark Cards, built on the belief that thoughtful communication could bring people closer together.

Hallmark launched the Keepsake Ornament series in 1973, introducing a small but charming collection of Christmas ornaments that rapidly captured the hearts of families and collectors alike. Over time, these ornaments evolved into a beloved holiday tradition; each year unveiling new designs that combined creativity with sentimental value.

One of the notable Keepsake Ornament artists is Edythe Kegrize, whose name appears on hundreds of ornament designs cataloged by ornament-focused collectors’ sites. While personal stylistic details are less documented, collector communities have shared that Kegrize enjoyed working with three-dimensional forms and decorative techniques, having transitioned from a long illustration career into Keepsake design. After nearly 41 years at Hallmark; including around 25 years as a greeting card illustrator; she retired from the company, leaving a legacy of imaginative, memorable designs.

Today, Hallmark’s Keepsake Ornament series stands as more than just seasonal décor; it’s a cultural tradition and collector phenomenon. With over 40 years of annual releases and a dedicated collector community, these ornaments serve as personalized mementos of holiday joy. Thanks to contributions from artists like Edythe Kegrize, whose long service and creativity helped shape the line, each ornament continues to be a small work of art; bringing warmth, nostalgia, and continuity to Christmas celebrations everywhere.

Bonus Question:

Giancarlo: What was it like to be a part of something as beloved as Hallmark Ornaments?

Edythe Kegrize: The Keepsake Ornament team was the most talented and supportive group of creative people I have ever worked with. Everyone was so generous with sharing techniques and ideas. A truly special studio that encouraged me to continually grow and try new things. I am a better artist having worked with all the creatives of Hallmark than I ever would have achieved on my own. Leading Studio Team ornaments that leveraged all of the talent of the studio was a special treat.

Piece Of Advice:

Giancarlo: What is this best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

Edythe Kegrize: Having a reputation as a bit of a perfectionist, “Know when you are finished with a design.” I could fuss at a design way too long without really improving it in anyone’s eyes but my own.

Thank you for reading! Have an amazing day and we will catch you again on Monday!
