The Heart Behind “Mister Roger’s Neighborhood”
Welcome to the Piece Of Advice Newsletter!
This week we are diving deep into a behind the scenes member of “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood”, Hedda Sharapan!

When “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” first began in the 1960s, Fred Rogers wasn’t working alone. Just behind the camera was Hedda Sharapan, a young psychology graduate who joined his team in 1966. What started as a production assistant role grew into a lifelong partnership dedicated to helping children feel seen, heard, and valued.
Hedda played a vital role in shaping the show’s gentle, honest tone. With her background in child development, she helped craft scripts that addressed big topics; like death, divorce, and anger; with rare sensitivity. Her insights ensured the show wasn’t just entertaining, but emotionally supportive for kids and parents alike.
Even after Fred’s passing, Hedda continued carrying his message forward. She consulted on newer Fred Rogers Productions shows like “Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood” and wrote the “Neighborly Words” newsletter, helping educators and families navigate the emotional needs of children in today’s world.
Hedda Sharapan’s quiet work behind the scenes has touched millions of lives. Like Fred, she believed in the power of kindness, empathy, and honesty; and thanks to her, that legacy continues to grow.
