Good morning and welcome back! Today we are looking into a composer/ songwriter who has contributed to some of Disney’s biggest songs, David Zippel!

David Zippel may not be a household name like some Disney legends, but his words have certainly found their way into millions of hearts. As the lyricist behind several of Disney’s most memorable songs, Zippel’s contributions have helped shape the golden age of Disney animation in the 1990s. Known for his clever wordplay and emotional depth, Zippel brought a Broadway sensibility to animated films, creating songs that were not only catchy but full of character and storytelling.

Zippel’s first major Disney project came with “Hercules” in 1997, where he partnered with composer Alan Menken to craft a gospel-inspired soundtrack that set the film apart. With hits like “Go the Distance” and the sassy musings of the Muses in “Zero to Hero” and “The Gospel Truth,” Zippel showed his range and wit. His lyrics gave Hercules his heart and the Muses their flair, helping to make the soundtrack a beloved fan favorite to this day.

Before his Disney days, Zippel made a name for himself on Broadway, co-writing the Tony Award-winning musical “City of Angels”. His theatrical roots served him well in the world of animation, where characters and emotions are brought to life through music. He later brought his magic touch to “Mulan”, contributing to the development of songs before the final soundtrack took shape. His early lyrical work helped guide the direction of the film’s powerful musical moments.
