Dasher!

A POA SPECIAL EDITION WITH AUTHOR MATT TAVARES!

Welcome to a SPECIAL EDITION of the Piece of Advice Newsletter!

Good morning! Today we are looking into a modern day classic Christmas book, Dasher! I was lucky enough to ask it’s awesome author; Matt Tavares, a couple of questions!

Matt Tavares’s “Dasher” takes readers on a whimsical journey into the untold origins of Santa’s most famous sleigh leader. The story follows a spirited young doe trapped in a traveling circus, longing for snow under her hooves and the light of the North Star above. With courage and determination, she escapes, finding herself on an adventure that leads her to Santa Claus and cements her place in Christmas legend.

Tavares, known for his warm storytelling and richly detailed illustrations, brings the tale to life with his signature blend of watercolor, gouache, pencil, and pastel. Having already won hearts with books like “Red & Lulu” and “Becoming Babe Ruth”, he continues to weave emotion and artistry seamlessly, creating pages that feel timeless and alive. “Dasher” is both a visual treat and a heartfelt narrative, the kind of book that invites readers to linger over every detail.

Since its release in 2019, the book has been met with glowing praise from critics, educators, and families. It became a New York Times, IndieBound, and USA Today bestseller, with many reviewers calling it an instant Christmas classic. Teachers have especially loved the empowering twist of making Dasher a female reindeer, and parents have appreciated its themes of bravery, hope, and the importance of following one’s dreams.

Today, “Dasher” has found its way into holiday traditions around the world. Its lush illustrations and gentle storytelling make it the perfect read-aloud for cozy December nights, and its message lingers long after the final page. For many families, it’s already more than just a Christmas story; it’s a yearly ritual, destined to be passed down through generations!

Bonus Question:

Giancarlo: What’s it like to have had “Dasher” become such a beloved book since it’s release?

Matt Tavares: It means the world to me that “Dasher” has become such a beloved book. When I make a book, I am alone here in my studio and I try to do my best and pour my heart out into my books. But I never know if people will like it. Knowing that “Dasher” has become part of some families’ Christmas traditions all over the world is truly amazing!

Piece Of Advice:

Giancarlo: What is this best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

Matt Tavares: Wow, the best advice I have ever gotten? I will say it was from my Dad. If I ever had a lot of work to do, he would say, “Divide and conquer.” Which means, break it down into smaller jobs, do one thing at a time. Don’t be overwhelmed by the whole big thing. That has helped me a lot in making books.
