The Yule Lads!
A POA SPECIAL EDITION With Brian Pilkington!
Welcome to a SPECIAL EDITION of the Piece of Advice Newsletter!
Good morning! Today, we’re looking into the life and work of an amazing author and illustrator, Brian Pilkington! I personally am a huge fan of his work and I was lucky enough to ask him a few questions!

Brian Pilkington was born in Liverpool in 1950 and trained as an artist at the University of Leicester before moving to Iceland in 1974. What started as a new adventure soon became the foundation of a long career illustrating some of Iceland’s most beloved children’s books. His first big project came in 1981 with “Ástarsaga úr fjöllunum” by Guðrún Helgadóttir, and from there he became a go-to illustrator for Icelandic stories. Over the decades, his work earned him numerous awards, including recognition for his book “Icelandic Trolls”, which became a celebrated part of the country’s cultural tourism.
Of all his projects, none have left a bigger mark than his playful depictions of the Yule Lads; the mischievous troll brothers of Icelandic Christmas lore. Traditionally, these 13 characters arrive one by one in the nights before Christmas, leaving gifts or tricks depending on children’s behavior. Pilkington’s book “The Yule Lads: A Celebration of Iceland’s Christmas Folklore” introduced them to English-speaking audiences and solidified their modern look. With his quirky humor and whimsical style, he gave each Lad a personality that made the centuries-old legends feel alive and relatable.
Pilkington’s influence goes far beyond the page. His designs appear on Christmas cards, ornaments, mugs, and figurines sold throughout Iceland, turning folklore into something families can bring into their homes during the holidays. For many, his illustrations have become the “official” version of what the Yule Lads look like, shaping how new generations imagine the once-intimidating figures. His work has helped bridge the gap between old oral traditions and modern celebrations, ensuring the Lads remain a joyful part of Icelandic culture.
Today, Pilkington is regarded as the artist who defined the visual identity of Iceland’s trolls and holiday tricksters. Through his books and illustrations, he’s preserved folklore in a way that’s both timeless and accessible. His work continues to charm readers and travelers alike, proving that a good story; and the right artist; can turn even mischievous trolls into beloved cultural icons.

Bonus Questions:
Giancarlo: Who was your favorite author growing up?
Brian: I am very dyslexic so I didn't get started on reading until my early 20's..... But then, I had a thing about Kurt Vonnegut and Somerset Maugham.
Giancarlo: Did you have any push back from friends and family on wanting to be a writer?
Brian: I started work as an illustrator at the age of 14 and have now been working as such for 60 years and have never received any discouragement - EVER!
Giancarlo: Which of your books are you the most proud of?
Brian: I have done so many books over the years. It's hard to choose! Maybe the "Yule Lads" or "Icelandic Trolls" or maybe "Trolls Philosophy and Wisdom"...just for its title! With these books I have been able to be as inventive as I liked, and feel totally accepted by my adopted Icelandic nation. They are very kind to me.
