Auntie Anne’s!
A POA SPECIAL EDITION With Founder Anne Beiler!
Welcome to a SPECIAL EDITION of the Piece of Advice Newsletter!
Good morning! Today, we’re looking into the 38 year history of Auntie Anne’s! I was even lucky enough to ask a couple of questions to the founder, Anne Beiler!

The warm, buttery scent of Auntie Anne’s pretzels is now a staple of malls, airports, and stadiums across the globe; but the story of this beloved brand begins humbly in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. In 1988, Anne Beiler and her husband Jonas opened a small stand at a local farmer’s market with one simple mission: to sell pretzels that tasted like home. Anne, who grew up in an Amish-Mennonite family, used the recipe as a way to fund a counseling center her husband had opened. What started as a modest community business quickly transformed into a phenomenon, thanks to word-of-mouth and the irresistible aroma of fresh-baked pretzels.
Anne’s journey wasn’t just about food; it was about resilience and vision. She faced personal tragedy and hardship, but channeled those struggles into building something that would bring comfort and joy to millions. The idea of Auntie Anne’s wasn’t born out of corporate ambition, but out of Anne’s desire to give back to her community. That authenticity resonated, and by the mid-1990s, Auntie Anne’s had expanded across the United States. The brand became synonymous with mall culture, offering not just pretzels but a little moment of happiness for shoppers everywhere.
Over time, Auntie Anne’s grew into a global franchise, with thousands of locations in more than 25 countries. The company’s success cemented Anne Beiler as one of the most inspiring entrepreneurs in the food industry. She later stepped away from the day-to-day operations but continued to share her story as a motivational speaker and author. In her books, including “Twist of Faith” and “The Secret Lies Within”, she details the ups and downs of her personal and business journey, inspiring readers with her message of perseverance, faith, and hope. Her story reminds us that behind every iconic brand is often a deeply human tale.
Today, Auntie Anne’s stands as both a snack empire and a symbol of purpose-driven entrepreneurship. Its legacy isn’t just in the millions of pretzels sold each year, but in the way Anne Beiler’s vision turned personal adversity into opportunity. Fun fact: the original Auntie Anne’s pretzel recipe has remained largely unchanged since its debut, a testament to the power of keeping things simple; and delicious. From farmer’s market beginnings to global recognition, Auntie Anne’s continues to prove that even the humblest ideas can rise, twist, and grow into something extraordinary.
