Alan Muraoka
27 Years and counting on “Sesame Street”!
Welcome to the Piece Of Advice Newsletter!
Good morning! Today we are talking about someone you’ve seen if you have kids OR if you’ve been a kid in the last 27 years, Alan Muraoka!

For nearly three decades, Alan Muraoka has been the smiling, steady presence behind the counter at Hooper’s Store on “Sesame Street”, serving up birdseed milkshakes and warm conversation. Since joining the cast in 1998, Alan has become much more than just a shopkeeper; he’s a trusted friend to generations of viewers and an unsung hero in the show’s behind-the-scenes magic. His kind demeanor and heartfelt performances have helped make the neighborhood feel like home to millions.
But did you know that Alan is not only an actor; he’s also a director on “Sesame Street”? That’s right! Alan has stepped behind the camera to direct numerous episodes, helping shape the show’s inclusive, joyful tone. He co-directed the special “See Us Coming Together,” which introduced Ji-Young, Sesame Street’s first Asian American Muppet, in a celebration of Asian American and Pacific Islander communities. Alan’s work on that special was especially meaningful, as he is Japanese American and passionate about representation in children’s media.
Fun fact: Alan made his Broadway debut in “Miss Saigon” and even played the Engineer in the national tour. He’s got serious musical theater chops and has brought that theatrical flair to his work on “Sesame Street”, whether he’s singing with Elmo or helping Cookie Monster learn about self-control (no small task!). Alan’s stage background helps bring energy and rhythm to the street; he’s known for keeping things light and lively during filming, often making the crew laugh between takes.
From spreading kindness on screen to promoting inclusion behind the scenes, Alan Muraoka has made Sesame Street even more magical. He’s a true role model; an artist, an advocate, and a friend to every child (and grown-up) who tunes in.
